Hello Again,
The past two weeks have been very busy for us. I have been assessing your children in reading, and your children have been busy writing letters for their flat selves to be mailed. So we are going to the post office Wednesday and be sure to ask your child for his/her permission slip to sign. If you would like to ge with us, jus t give me a call at 464-5722 or you may email me at kempel@dpsd.org. Maybe you would like to leave a comment on our web page.
The week will coninue to be busy. We have principal pride this month on the 27th and our Harvest Party is Friday. Your child may bring a snack for all to share at our 2:oo party. Snacks need to be bought and not homemade. Fruits, veggies, and some candy would be nice. Just remember they will be coming home to you afterwards. If you care to join with us, please come. Please send a note to school as to what your child will be bringing. Thank You ahead of time.
Homework: You no longer need to sign daily for reading. I will check it on Friday. Students are still required to read 60 minutes. Other homework will be daily.
Well I think this may be it. Thanks for you support.

Hello again. This week we have lots of news. Children will be bringing home important information.
One is the PTCA’s fund raiser. A cookbook has been written by the staff of Arcadia, and orders are being taken. Ultra cool! Another is permission to publish your child’s name. Third is permission for your child to take the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test which is designed for your child to be considered for Pursuirt. This is our gifted program. If you have any questions concerning any of these, feel free to call or email me.
Homework is attached also. Once again we are practicing our math facts. Also we finished Flat Stanley, and will be mailing our flat selves off. Please provide an address for your child to send he/she flat self to someone who is dependable and will correspond with he/she.
We have been in school for a month now, and I know that some of you have asked to volunteer in the classroom. I will be contacting you soon. Also this letter can be accessed on the web. If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to call or email me.
Thank you,

Reading—-Writing—–Spelling
Mrs. Remington has challenged the students to read 500,000 words by the end of the year. Although this is a lot of words, we feel they can do it. Words are tally on Reading Counts program. I, too, have accepted the challenge and will be reading and taking quizs along with our class. It should be fun!!
As a class we are still learning to read to self and read to someone. Mrs. Ball’s fifth grade class will be joining us on Fridays for Read to Someone. Last Friday we began a get to know each other activity. Each student received a paper scarecrow with a blank color code. Students wrote down what color they wanted for each part of their scarecrow. Then they exchanged with their reading buddy and colored them. They will finish them off this Friday by cutting them out and gluing them together. It should be quite interesting.
Spelling and writing are a part of reading. Students are learning to self manage and transition from one activity to another. This week we will be working on words study, writing independently, and listening to a book on tape. These past weeks we have been read Flat Stanley. Soon we will create our own flat self and send he/she on his/her way. More to come later.
In writing we are finishing up our Acrostic Poem about zebras. We used facts from a book to write the poem. We will be editing and publishing them by Friday.
In math we are looking at a variety of graphs and what types of data is collected or displayed on them. Please share with your child any graphs you may encounter in your reading . We also will be working on facts. Students are progressing wonderfully. I will definitely send home practice sheet for the week. Thanks for your help.
Don’t forget to check and sign your child’s planner, but most of all please be sure to read with them and look over their math.
IMPORTANT DATES:
September 29th is picture day.
Deptember 30th is Principal Pride Day.
Have a great week.

It has been a very busy last three weeks for your children. We have been learning how to choose good fit books, read to self, retells, and writing in small amounts of time. Also we had our first spelling review (test) this Friday.
In Math we are learning to memorize addition facts and subtraction facts. You can help your child by timing he/she for 1 minute with practice sheets sent home. We are also learning the procedure to come into Math class and begin working on our Math for Today, which has a variety of problems to solve. Next week we will be studying graphs. Your child will be bringing home a workbook at least every other day to practice what was taught that day or week in math.
We are also having a time to share our Amazing Timelines. The date your child shares is written in his/her planner. Also you will find any assignments or fun events coming up. Please read your child’s planner. Also I will be sending book orders home Monday the 20th and orders are due by the 27th. Please pay by check or money order as I am unable to handle money.
Thanks to all family members that attended the Relatives Came Day. Your children truly enjoyed themselves.
With this news letter, I have included a reading coaching form to help you read with your child. We have been working on check for understanding. I appreciate your support.
Have a great weekend.
